I’ve not blogged in a while and I reckon my narrative writing skills is getting rustier so here I am! SAM really doesn’t help narrative writing at all as all we do is writing essays according to a format i.e Introduction – thesis statement – topic statement – body paragraph 1 – body paragraph 2 – body paragraph 3 – restate thesis statement – conclusion – bye bye. Lol.
At first, I was like why why why can’t I write academic essays in my own style? Why must everyone follow a set of rules just like every other person? Why???? Coz if you read articles in Time or Newsweek which I can assure you to be bloody serious on current issues,do they follow this Introduction – thesis statement – topic statement – body paragraph 1 – body paragraph 2 – body paragraph 3 – restate thesis statement – conclusion format? If they really do, I can foresee the sales of the two most powerful magazines in the world
plummeting. Who would wanna read boring essays in one rigid format? To prove the people who said that essays will only be good if they followed the format set for us wrong, instead of just reading through the articles in the magazines I mentioned just now, I sacrificed a little of my time to look for the so-called important thesis statement in the articles.
Ok first one.
Dang.
Absent.
Never mind I’ll just look at another one.
Dang dang.
Absent too.
Now you see my point! >:/
But, only me knowing that they were wrong isn’t sufficient. So, I raised this question during the IELTS workshop. Miss Mary, as polite as ever, told me kindly that we’re asked to follow the set of rules while the column writers in Time and Newsweek don’t have to because those were writers who have a flair for writing while we on the other hand, err don’t? Nah she didn’t say that but I suppose so? T_T I can’t write…
Mock IELTS speaking test tomorrow!! Anxiety is swallowing me up whole. Lol.
